Once again, the music industry has discovered a gem, a talent who is unique in every way.

Musa Manzini is undoubtedly a rare gem of the 2000s. Not only a bass player of extraordinary brilliance, but a prolific composer, arranger and producer. He is one of an exceptionally few bass players in the world to use the instrument as a lead instrument, joining amongst the notables, John Pattutici, Stanley Clark and Marcus Miller. Graduated at UCT music school with a Bachelor of Music degree in composition and arranging. Lecturer at UCT (1997-99).

Musa hit the music scene with a debut CD release titled “ New Reflections”. The CD has received airplay in the influential Kaya FM, P4, Metro, SAFM play lists, and highly acclaimed by jazz enthusiasts and critics. His gigs around Johannesburgin well known venues like Bassline, Kippies and at Caesars Casino have been well received, leading to his stature growing amongst the lovers of this genre of music, as a musician deserving of recognition. He has played at various high profile Jazz Festivals, notably. The North Sea Jazz Festival, Cape Town (2001), New Orleans Jazz Festival, Louisiana (2001), Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festivals in Jozi, Cape Town and Grahamstown (2000-2002).

Musa ’s music is sophisticated, dynamic and progressive, offering varied melodies and rhythms within the modern jazz idiom, thus making him a musician who defies pigeonholing. His New CD “Tributes and Memories” provides a listener with a sense of joy, liveliness and soul satisfaction. It is easily accessible to the ear and appeals to a wider audience. It displays his unparalleled instrumental proficiency and maturity in composition, arranging and production, in a very original and unique manner. An important characteristic of this CD is the Musa Manzini sound that has been developed and honed to perfection using the bass as a lead instrument. The new CD features about 12 musicians and guest artists from Senegal.

His talent and ability has been recognized by the most successful producer of the South African TV soaps, Mfundi Vundla of Morula Pictures who appointed him as the Musical Director in the youth soapie ‘Backstage’ in 2000. He has in 2002 joined the very successful TV show ‘Generations’. These appointments particularly to Generations, the soap with largest viewer-ship in South Africa, points once more to the versatility of his talent.

Musa ’s strength lies in his professionalism, his sensitivity to promoters needs and his audience, the readiness to use material composed by accomplished musicians and the fact that at all times he combines and plays with some of the most individually talented musicians, showing his own confidence in his own talent.
