Simply life is a recent offering by the accomplished bassist Musa Manzini. “It is simply about life”, as he puts it. “These are life experiences, good, bad, sentimental, happy, sad and religious paths I have recently gone through”. This project is a different twist from the three previous recordings which featured the bass as the frontline instrument. Here Musa takes a backseat and rather lays the groove and highlights his other skills as a composer and producer by featuring other recording artists. There is a unique fusion of vernacular in a South African jazz context that makes Simply Life a very interesting and captivating project.
The songs in this album excellently capture these moods in a very unique manner, i.e. the unmistaken voices of Khanyo Maphumulo and Khanya Ceza are featured in songs like “Esikhawini”, “Ndifun ‘imali”, “Amadzana” and “Never Let Me Go”. Jaco Maria and Marcus Wyatt are featured on “Fly Like A Bird”. “Ezintabeni” is a traditional song sang in Xhosa where Khanya and Nhlanhla Magagula take to the front. It should be noted that the experience of the renowned guitarist Laurence Matshiza shines throughout these songs. Drummer Kwazi Shange and percussionist Tlale Makhene hold the fort and keep the heartbeat together as usual. Antonio Lyons and Erik Pilane are featured once more on “Step Away”.
